Power BI now outranks Tableau, Qlik, Domo, Cognos . . . heck, everyone.

For the tenth consecutive year, Microsoft has landed in the Leaders quadrant of the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms.  This year, however, Microsoft is celebrating major strides for its vision and execution ratings, blowing past their 2016 leadership position, and landing them in a record breaking position, a decade in the making.

Where is Microsoft winning with Power BI?  In four areas – cost, ease of use, vision, and user community.

According to the reportMicrosoft Power BI is . . . 80% lower than other cloud BI products.”  A free desktop application, a low monthly subscription ($10/seat), and integrations with Office 365 are all reasons why customers cite “low cost of ownership” as an key reason for choosing Power BI.

In the past, Microsoft has been criticized for having simplistic data analysis and an inability to handle large data volumes.  No longer.  Customers now place Power BI “in the top quartile for ease of use and complexity of analysis”.

As we have noted in previous posts, Microsoft is executing on their roadmap, with monthly (sometimes weekly) product updates.  The product releases track closely with the 6,000+ customer-submitted ideas from their 200,000+ active community participants.  A strong community is resulting in a strong product, and Gartner has taken note.  “Microsoft has a strong community of partners, resellers, and individual users”.  Of all the accolades, this might be the biggest feather in Power BI’s hat.  Reacting to Gartner’s assessment, Power BI’s General Manager noted, “We’re encouraged by the progress we’ve made as a community in executing against the ambitious goal set when Power BI was made generally available only a short time ago in July 2015…. To provide BI to more people than ever before, across all roles and disciplines within organizations.”
